Underwater City of Samabaj

Underwater City of Samabaj

Location
:  Lake Atitlan in Guatemala

Description:  At the time of Christ’s crucifixion, the Book of Mormon records that various cities in Book of Mormon lands were sunk in the depths of the sea.  The Book of Mormon states:

3 Nephi 4:6-8 – “And it came to pass in the thirty and fourth year, in the first month, in the fourth day of the month, there arose a great storm, such an one as never had been known in all the land; And there was also a great and terrible tempest; and there was terrible thunder, insomuch that it did shake the whole earth as if it was about to divide asunder; and there were exceeding sharp lightnings, such as never had been known in all the land.  And the city of Zarahemla did take fire; and the city of Moroni did sink into the depths of the sea, and the inhabitants thereof were drowned“.

One underwater city found in Central America is Samabaj, located approximately 50 feet below the surface of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala.  According to an eariler Maya Relief Foundation’s website (no longer active), “Water rapidly covered the city about 2,000 years ago.”  In addition, pottery found there has been dated 100 B.C. – 100 A.D. [40]  This is precisely when Christ was crucified.
