Yuchi Town Site

Yuchi Town Site

Location
:  Fort Benning, Alabama

Description:  A prehistoric Yuchi town site sits at Fort Benning, Russell County, Alabama.  The town site itself is relatively young and not within the Book of Mormon time period, but the Yuchi Indian mound builders themselves have a mysterious origin.  During one period of time they resided primarly in Tennessee.

The Yuchi Indians call themselves Coyoha or Tsoyoha, meaning “children of the Sun”.  An Archaeology News Network article states “The Yuchi Indians of the Southeastern United States also have a tradition that they paddled to North America from the ‘home of the sun’ in the East” [41].  The Book of Mormon contains multiple people groups that came to North America from the East, traveling across the ocean waters.
